Learning objectives

How to make and use a simple key for classifying everyday objects.

Resources required

  • Photocopy of a simple key for sorting classroom items.
  • OHT of the same.
  • A tray or cup of 6 items for each group to sort ( for example, a small, round sponge, a rag, a stone, a leaf, a marble, a piece of paper).
  • A3 paper for drawing a key.

Learning activity

  • Explain how the key works (a yes/no to each question, then follow to the next box).

  • Using the photocopy students should be asked to sort the contents of their pencil cases into the six major sets. Names should be given for the sets at each stage of the key (for example, writing tools).

  • In groups the students should each draw up a key to sort the items in their tray. Each item must be named and the key tested.

Learning outcomes

  • Sort items into groups using a key.
  • Draw up a simple key to classify objects.

Extension work

  • Make a key to sort out some well-known animals/plants.
  • Homework: If you had to sort the class without using names, what characteristics would you use (for example, boy/girl, long/short hair, blue/brown eyes)?

Special needs

Divide up fewer items and describe why they are divided this way.
Higher ability students could be given a greater number of items and some that are more difficult to group.
