Lesson 4
Inheritance
Learning objectives
Learn that offspring inherit characteristics from their parents.
Resources required
- Posters, drawings or OHTs of two different dogs, e.g: one tall, thin and spotted, the other short, black and hairy.
- A4 paper.
Learning activity
- Recap on variation: Humans are all different but have major similarities, such as two legs.
- Discuss ways in which the students think they are similar to their parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters.
- Show pictures of two different dogs. Ask the class to draw a puppy.
- Discuss their pictures as a class.
- Student should record in their books what features their puppy has inherited.
- What could happen to the puppy to alter how it looks (environmental factors)?
Learning outcomes
- Explain that inherited features are acquired from the parents.
- Describe how inherited features can be altered by the environment.
- Predict some different combinations in offspring.
Extension work
- Design titles/headings for display of dogs and puppies.
- Add pictures of variation from environment.
