Learning objectives

  • Learn that variation is affected by the environment.
  • Practise discussion and reporting skills.

Resources required

A3 paper and coloured felt-tip pens.

Learning activity

  • Recap on variation in our heights.

  • In groups students should record their ideas on paper about what factors could affect the height of a person. After 10 minutes, one person from each group should report back to the class.

  • Record major ideas on the board/paper.

  • Discuss and lead onto environmental/acquired variation.

  • Record in books some of the major environmental influences on height.

  • List other environmental causes of variation eg: sunshine.

Learning outcomes

Explain ways in which variation can be altered by the environment.

Extension work

  • Investigate the effects of sunlight on the skin.
  • List 10 things that could happen to identical twins to make them look different.

    Special needs

    Should be part of main lesson throughout.
