Science Unit 7D
Lesson 2
Variation 2
Learning objectives
- Learn that living things show variation within a species.
- Learn that this variation can be continuous or discontinuous.
- Practise practical measuring and recording skills.
- Learn how to correctly graph scientific data.
Resources required
- Rulers or tape measures for measuring height.
- Graph paper.
Learning activity
- Use finished graphs or do the graph on the board from last lesson's data.
- Discuss what the graph tells them.
- Discuss height - are we all similar in height? What is the range?
- Measure all students and record on the board. Students record in books.
- Graph these data as a bar graph (line graph if already done in Maths).
- Compare with the eye colour graph. Record that this heights are continuous variation, whereas eye colour is discontinuous.
Learning outcomes
- Describe different ways in which living things show variation.
- Choose suitable ways to record and graph simple scientific data.
Extension work
Prepare graphs of different types using these data.
Special needs
- Could continue with eye-colour graphs or measuring skills.
- Use ICT to draw graphs.
