Science Unit 7D
Lesson 11
Patterns in variation/correlations
Learning objectives
How to explore suspected correlations in data.
Resources required
Learning activity
- Ask students to record in their books two items of data: their height and their gender. This should be recorded as a set of class data.
- Discuss with the class whether there is any correlation between the two sets. Are boys taller than girls?
- Graph this data as pairs of x and y values to obtain a range of points. Is there a line of points? What does this tell us? Is there a correlation?
Learning outcomes
To decide whether there is any correlation between the two sets of data.
Extension work
Choose other pairs of data and see if there are correlations.
