Learning objectives

  • The meaning of the terms 'vertebrate' and 'invertebrate'.
  • The five major groups of vertebrates and their special characteristics.

Resources

  • Photocopy of information and pictures of fish (shark, cod, herring); amphibians (frog, toad, newt); reptiles (tortoise, adder, crocodile); birds (eagle, duck, penguin); mammals (humans, cat, dolphin).
  • Worksheet of questions on vertebrates.

Learning activity

  • Give out the photocopied sheets and the worksheet.
  • Students should answer the questions in their exercise books.
  • Discuss their answers.

Learning outcomes

  • Explain what makes a vertebrate.
  • Name the five major groups and give examples.
  • List the major characteristics of mammals.

Extension work

Investigation into warm-blooded or cold-blooded animals.

Special needs

Lower: Using the worksheet, cut out and mount the pictures on A3 paper to show the five groups.
Higher: Provide information about monotremes and marsupials from which they are to devise a worksheet for others.
