Classification of vertebrates
Learning objectives
- The meaning of the terms 'vertebrate' and 'invertebrate'.
- The five major groups of vertebrates and their special characteristics.
Resources
- Photocopy of information and pictures of fish (shark, cod, herring); amphibians (frog, toad, newt); reptiles (tortoise, adder, crocodile); birds (eagle, duck, penguin); mammals (humans, cat, dolphin).
- Worksheet of questions on vertebrates.
Learning activity
- Give out the photocopied sheets and the worksheet.
- Students should answer the questions in their exercise books.
- Discuss their answers.

- Explain what makes a vertebrate.

Extension work
Investigation into warm-blooded or cold-blooded animals.
Special needs
